First Week of School

Hello families! Welcome to our class updates!  We had a great week of getting to know each other, establishing classroom expectations and routines and getting started with curriculum! We are grateful for the cooler temperatures that is making our classroom more comfortable. We are working together to build a community of learners and to get into the swing of third grade.

Here's what you can ask your 3rd grader about:
* Starting our day with morning work ("School is Cool," "Getting to Know You," "All About Me," "Interest Survey," and Brain Teaser Friday)
* Using the book "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" to build our classroom community
* Learning the first 4 out of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids - Habit 1 (Be Proactive), Habit 2 (Begin with the End in Mind), Habit 3 (Put First Things First), Habit 4 (Think Win-Win), Habit 5 (Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood), Habit 6 (Synergize), Habit 7 (Sharpen the Saw)
* Sharing our Me Bags - a wonderful way to learn about each other
* Playing Snowball - a fun way to learn more about one another
* Making our Me People - a creative way for students to share more about themselves and you will get to guess who is who on Tuesday night!
* Hula hoop team-building with Mr.Wiza and Ms.Rajashekar during Second Step (our social emotional learning time)
* Starting the year with a PBIS assembly and learning our new school chant
* Thinking about our thinking (metacognition)
* Reading a story called "First Day Jitters" and reviewing the story elements (plot, characters, setting)
* Writing letters to Ms.Rajashekar
* Continuing to build community and a growth mindset with ClassDojo videos and our read aloud books from this week: "This School Year Will Be THE BEST!," "The Brand New Kid," "Teamwork Isn't My Thing, and I Don't Like to Share," "My Mouth is a Volcano," and "Fortunately"
* Starting our first unit in math with an introduction to multiplication as thinking about it as groups of objects (OA.1)
* Watching a learnzillion video on interpreting products by drawing pictures (OA.1)
* Warming up with counting and math talks during math
