September 16th Update

The cooler weather is making our days more comfortable for learning.  We continue to build community, get into our learning routines and curriculum, and working together. 

Here's what you can ask your 3rd grader about:
* Starting our morning routine of doing analogies to start off the day
* Reviewing math concepts as part of our morning work
* Starting our language arts homework with organizational features, graphic features and context clues
* Learning and living all the 7 Habits of Happy Kids in our classroom - Habit 1 (Be Proactive), Habit 2 (Begin with the End in Mind), Habit 3 (Put First Things First), Habit 4 (Think Win-Win), Habit 5 (Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood), Habit 6 (Synergize), Habit 7 (Sharpen the Saw)
* Focusing on skills for learning (listening, focusing attention, using self-talk) in 2nd Step  with Mr.Wiza and Ms.Rajashekar 
* Reading a story called "Amazing Grace" and reviewing the story elements and theme of the story
* Starting grammar with types of sentences and spelling with short vowel sounds
* Taking a vocabulary pretest in preparation to starting our "Building Vocabulary from Word Roots"
* Starting social studies by defining what is social studies and getting an introduction of our social studies topics for the year
* Learning about democracy and the three branches of government
* Continuing to build community and a growth mindset with Pep Talks by Kid President and read aloud books such as "One Grain of Rice," "The Araboolies of Liberty Street," "The Worst Day of My Life Ever!,"And to Think That We Thought That We'd Never Be Friends," Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon," "Enemy Pie"
* Continuing with our first unit in math with understanding multiplication by thinking about groups of objects (OA.1) and understanding division by thinking about how one group can be divided into smaller groups (OA.2)
* Watching learnzillion videos to better understand multiplication (OA.1) and division (OA.2)
* Working with manipulatives to help us in our understanding of multiplication and division
* Warming up with bubbles, group counting and math talks during math
* Practicing multiplication facts
* Starting iPad bootcamp
* Taking the MAP test in reading and math
* Doing bus evacuation and fire drills

Upcoming Events and Dates:
* Thursday, September 22nd is Lincoln School's 1st Annual Back to School Picnic from 5:30-7:30pm. Rain date is Friday, September 23rd.
* Friday, September 30th is Picture Day. More details will be coming home soon.
